27.Nov.2019: Workshop on Quantum Materials & Nanotechnology

As part of the revised UK Science Case for a UK XFEL a number of themed Scientific and Technical Workshops will take place around the country in order to feed into the revised science case. The University of Southampton will host the Workshop on Quantum Materials & Nanotechnology. Further details are available here. Follow this link to register.

18-19.Sep.2018: Diamond-II Workshop, Diamond Light Source, UK

The aims of this workshop are to introduce Diamond-II, to discuss its potential benefits for the existing facilities, and to develop the science case for the machine upgrade. Further details are available here.

8-9.Jan.2018: Physical Science with FELs – Synergies with Diamond and RAL, Diamond Light Source, UK

The aim of this workshop was to showcase XFEL science in the UK and assess the status of Physical XFEL science.

25-27.Jan.2017: European XFEL Users’ Meeting and Satellite Meetings,, European XFEL, Schenefeld, Hamburg

Further details are available here.

1-2.Dec.2016 : User Workshop FXE instrument, European XFEL, Schenefeld, Hamburg

European XFEL shall see first X-ray FEL light in the first half of 2017 and a start of the Early User Experiment program shortly thereafter. Current plans foresee to issue a first call for proposals for experiments before the end of 2016. This call will comprise two of the scientific instruments, the Femtosecond X-ray Experiments (FXE) and Single Particles, Clusters and Biomolecules and Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (SPB/SFX) instruments, which are scheduled to start the early user program in summer 2017.

The User Workshops offer the opportunity for the scientific community to learn more about the specific scientific instrument, its overall capabilities and the specific conditions expected for the Early User Experiment phase. Discussion of various scientific applications at the respective instruments will be an important aspect. The workshops open the opportunity to discuss and form collaborations for experiments. Furthermore, details of the beam time application process and scheduling of Early User Experiments will be discussed.

5-7.Sep.2016 : Science@FELs 2016, Trieste, Italy

Science@FELs 2016 will focus on the scientific highlights achieved during the last years in the fast evolving development and operation lasers sources that are enabling experiments to shorter wavelengths, adding element and chemical state specificity by exciting and probing electronic transitions from core levels.

31.Aug.2016 : Faraday Discussion on Ultrafast Imaging of Photochemical Dynamics

The purpose of this meeting is to gather key participants who represent the full scientific scope of ultrafast imaging and photochemical dynamics. Bringing together different communities of experimentalist and theoreticians working on similar topics but from different perspectives provides an opportunity to ask the fundamental questions and to set the agenda for future research. The meeting will be used to identify how new techniques can complement each other, while addressing specific areas of contention and controversy, and asking; Is the field reaching a point where the fundamental guiding principles of photochemistry can be established?

15-19.Aug.2016 : X-Ray Microscopy Conference 2016

XRM 2016 will be held in the historical city of Oxford in the UK. It will be the 13th conference in the X-Ray Microscopy series which began in 1983. Bringing together experts in the development and use of X-ray microscopes, the conference will address the most recent advances in X-Ray microscopy and its applications via an exciting and stimulating program of talks and posters, with the opportunity to explore X-ray microscopy’s position alongside related techniques and disciplines.

7-10.Jun.2016 : Coherence 2016

The International Workshop on Phase Retrieval and Coherent Scattering, now a biennal conference, first took place first at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. in May 2001 and is traditionally held in a waterside location (Palm Cove, Porquerolles, Asilomar, Warnemüde Fukuoka, and Evanston). A team of French researchers has gathered around synchrotron-SOLEIL to organize this 2016 edition. As for the previous editions, the topics addressed will be coherent imaging, structure and dynamics, theorical and computational methods and progress in new X or XUV sources, from high brilliance synchrotron to X-ray free electron lasers.

23-24.Mar.2016 : 2016 International Workshop on Bragg Coherent Diffractive Imaging

Recently the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) has successfully constructed Taiwan Photon Source (TPS), a low-emittance 3 GeV synchrotron light source. The 7 phase-I beamlines at the TPS will soon be available to users and be able to demonstrate their wide variety of applications. Three of them, Coherent X-ray Scattering, Soft X-ray Scattering beamline and X-ray Nanoprobe beamlines, are designed for X-ray coherent experiments. Bragg Coherent Diffractive Imaging (CDI) has become an emerging tool for the forefront research of nano-scaled science owing to the advances of high-brilliance synchrotron sources and X-ray free-electron laser techniques. For example, many scientific results such as probes of static defects and operando dislocation imaging have been successfully demonstrated. The two-day scientific program of 2016 International Workshop on Bragg CDI will focus on the basics and latest applications of coherent X-ray on materials analysis. We also hope that the workshop will facilitate ample discussion for the new scientific opportunities at the TPS.

2.Mar.2016 : Meeting on applications of ultrafast and high brightness X-rays

The Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London, will host this years meeting on applications of ultrafast and high brightness X-rays.

1-3.Feb.2016  : Workshop on Imaging with Femtosecond Electrons and X-ray Pulses (IFEXS), Trieste, Italy

The latest achievements in ultrafast electron and X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy and imaging have enabled to follow the evolution of a variety of systems during phase transitions, structural transformations and chemical reactions.

The scope of the workshop is to discuss the next frontier of ultrafast science regarding the advances of both electrons and photons based techniques with a special focus on the necessary cross-feeding between them. Emphasis will be put on the complementary aspects of ultrafast electron microscopy and X-FEL based diffractive imaging techniques and on the future perspective of broadening the applicability of these tools by considering X-rays also as a chemically selective photo excitation and combining fs-X-ray beams with fs electron beams in an ad hoc modified Transmission Electron Microscope.
